My figure paintings explore notions of personal identity. The rendered human forms personify steps on the path of self inquiry.
In the series entitled Body English the painted figures juggle the stories that comprise our sense of self. Poured and splattered paint on the bodies of these people can be seen as the conditioning and life events that have come to define them individually. The fluid quality of the paint suggests the malleability of circumstance; the creative power to take what we have and make something new. Through the act of painting as metaphor, the figures define themselves and affect the world around them.
The Kaleidoscope series is a group of oil paintings being developed concurrently. It focuses less on the individual's paradigm but rather ruminates on setting that paradigm down long enough to glimpse the less biased aspects of being a living organism. Patterning and mirrored elements are fused with figurative realism to express themes of interdependence and wonder at the mysteries of being.
